How to read your Human Design chart

A bodygraph shows a lot at once, which is why most people bounce off it. Read it in this order and each layer explains the next.

1. Start with your type, not your gates

Type is the top-level summary of how your energy works. It answers whether you are built to initiate, to respond, to wait for recognition, or to sample your environment over a lunar cycle. Everything else in the chart is detail underneath that.

Type is derived, not assigned: it falls out of which centres are defined and whether a motor connects to your Throat.

2. Read your strategy as a decision rule

Your strategy is the practical instruction attached to your type — respond, respond and inform, initiate and inform, wait for the invitation, or wait a lunar cycle. It is the single highest-leverage thing in the chart because it applies to every significant decision you make.

When decisions are made against your strategy, the not-self theme appears: frustration, anger, bitterness or disappointment. Treat that emotion as a diagnostic rather than a mood.

3. Use your inner authority for how, and when, you decide

Authority describes where reliable clarity comes from in your body. Sacral authority is an immediate gut response. Emotional authority means there is no truth in the now — clarity arrives across an emotional wave, so time is part of the decision.

Splenic authority is a quiet, one-time-only instinct. Self-projected and Ego authorities work through speaking out loud. Mental authority needs a sounding board and the right environment. Lunar authority needs about twenty-eight days.

4. Read your profile as how you learn and meet the world

Your profile is two numbers, for example 6/2 or 1/3. The first line is conscious — how you experience yourself. The second is unconscious — how others experience you, often before you notice it.

Lines describe process: investigating, hermit-like withdrawal and natural talent, trial and error, networking, practical solutions, role modelling, and transcendence.

5. Then look at defined and undefined centres

Defined centres are consistent — they are yours, reliably, in every room. Undefined centres are where you are open, take in other people's energy, and are most susceptible to conditioning.

This is why undefined centres are often where the recurring life patterns live: the pressure you feel there frequently belongs to someone else.

Where the numbers come from

Every activation in the chart is a planetary longitude mapped onto a wheel of 64 gates, taken at two moments: your birth, and the point 88 degrees of solar arc before it — about three months earlier. The first set is conscious, the second unconscious.

Because fast-moving bodies are involved, an accurate birth time and a correctly resolved historical time zone are not optional details. They are the difference between your chart and someone else's.
